Man who dragged dog with his motorcycle arrested in Bonao

Bonao, D.R. — A case of animal abuse in Bonao has generated great indignation in the community and on social networks after a video was disseminated where Mr. Domingo Díaz Veloz is observed dragging a dog with his motorcycle through the streets of the municipality.
Following the dissemination of the images, Magistrate Santa Milagros Martínez, in coordination with the Department of Animal Protection and agents of the Sub-Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DICRIM), proceeded to arrest Díaz Veloz, who now faces charges of violation of Law 248-12 on the Protection and Responsible Keeping of Animals.
The deputy director of Animal Protection in Bonao, Juan Luis Bourdier, rejected this act and emphasized the authorities’ commitment to the fight against animal abuse. “It is unacceptable that in the 21st century, we continue to see this type of cruelty. Law 248-12 establishes clear sanctions for those who commit this abuse. We will continue to work so that those responsible face the consequences of their actions,” said Bourdier.
For her part, the head magistrate of the province of Monseñor Nouel, Santa Milagros Martínez, assured that there will be no tolerance for those who violate the rights of animals. “Animal abuse is a crime and must be treated as such. We cannot allow these actions to go unpunished. We will enforce the law to set a precedent and raise awareness among the population about respect and care for animals,” said the magistrate.
Law 248-12, in article 66, establishes sanctions for animal abuse ranging from economic fines to prison sentences. In this case, the authorities have initiated legal proceedings against Díaz Veloz, who must answer to justice for his actions.
Animal protection organizations and citizens have expressed their indignation on social networks and requested exemplary sanctions to prevent these cases from continuing. They have also called on citizens to denounce any act of animal abuse and promote a culture of respect for animals.
The Animal Protection Department reiterated its commitment to continuing to eradicate abuse and ensure the welfare of animals in the province. In the meantime, the affected dog was rescued and placed under the care of an animal protection organization that will evaluate its health condition and possibly adopt it.
This case brings back to the table the need to reinforce awareness campaigns and strict enforcement of laws to prevent animal abuse in the country.
