Boots & brains: first Dominican woman to command a battalion

Santo Domingo.- Lt. Col. Paula Manuela Fernández Jiménez, 36, on Tues. made Dominican military history by becoming the first woman ever to command a battalion, an Army tactical unit of 500 troops.

A bachelorette with no children, Fernández also holds a diploma on Command Staff.

She joined the Army in 2002 and is one of the 55 women graduated in 2005 from the Batalla de las Carreras Military Academy, with a Military Sciences degree.

She also holds a degree in Tourism Business Administration and a masters in International Commerce.
