7.7% of Dominicans aged 15+ is illiterate: poll

Santo Domingo.- 7.7% of the Dominican population age 15  or over doesn’t know how to read or write, according to the National Survey of Multiple Purpose Homes (ENHOGAR 2016), conducted with 55,002 people.

Illiteracy in the Dominican Republic is highest among men, at 8.3 percent, compared with 7.2 percent for women.

Likewise, the National Office Statistics report found that Santo Domingo is the city with the lowest proportion of illiteracy, with 3.8%.

Moreover, 98% of young people between the ages of 15 and 19 are literate. Also, adults over 65 years of age are less literate, at 20.5%.
