A record 5.14M tourists in 2014: Central Bank

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic posted a record 5,141,377 non-resident passengers in 2014, of which 4,464,643 were foreigners and 676,734 Dominicans, or 451,607 more than 2013.

The Central Bank said there were 51,718 more nonresident Dominicans who visited last year than in 2013.

It said 429,494 nonresident aliens came to the country in December, a 6.9% jump and 27,651 additional tourists compared with December 2013.

The Central Bank says the figures stem from a combination of higher growth prospects in the US -the country’s main source market for tourists- and the Tourism Ministry’s strategies implemented in collaboration with the private sector.

As to passenger arrivals by region, the Central Bank said 2014 posted a jump of 238,972 nonresident visitors from North America, headed by the US with 206,617. “Europe continues recovering, posting a growth of 5.3%, registering 57,750 additional tourists, which contrasts positively with the fall by 13,320 travelers recorded in 2013.”
