Regional airport traffic will increase due to Cuba tourism boom

Santo Domingo.- The normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba will result in a higher number of travelers for Havana’s airport and will raise leisure-oriented enplanements at several U.S. airports, including Miami.

According to outlet Aviationnews.net, Fitch Ratings estimates Havana’s current enplanements at around a few million per year, saying that lack of certainty on the figure stems from a lack of transparency.

Traffic in the country could grow to be similar to that of two airports in the region, Fitch said. "In our view, Puerto Rico’s Luis Munoz Marin International and the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana International Airport share some factors with Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport, aiding this comparison," the report said.

Pending the outcome of the decision over which routes will be granted, Fitch said it believes the normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba will result in a modest rise in travel, particularly in Miami, Aviationnews.net pointed out.
