Dominican Republic’s Southwest starts its tourism trek

Pedernales, Dominican Republic.- After years of announcementsand broken promises, the Public Works Ministry on Thursday broke ground for constructionof the Pedernales Corridor (southwest), recently promised by president DaniloMedina.

Public Works senior official Ramon Pepin said the projectwill develop tourism in Pedernales, and includes construction of a pier, storefronts,fishing area, sports facilities, among other infrastructure.

He said the work also includes the expansion of the airportat Cabo Rojo, with a new terminal, a longer runway and access road.

Pepin said a new access roads to the village of Cabo Rojo willbe built, especially to the beaches, including Bahia de las Aguilas. “It’s PresidentMedina’s interest for Pedernales to become the haven of ecotourism.”

"I have heard the potential and the beauty ofPedernales since childhood, and I feel so good today, to be the person makingsuch an important announcement for the development of this region that startswith Pedernales," the official said.
