American Chamber: unbridled politicking must be sanctioned

Santo Domingo.- After the Political Parties Law was passed, American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (Amchamrd) president David Fernández said the Central Electoral Board’s challenge now is to limit all politicking to the pre-campaign period, by imposing sanctions of inadmissibility of their pre-candidacy on those who violate it.

“The country cannot continue in an indefinite electoral campaign, which seriously harms the economic development of the nation. In addition, the violation of its prohibition, without applying the sanction provided by law, makes the electoral body responsible for enforcing it lose credibility,” the executive said.

Fernandez, speaking at Amchamrd’s monthly luncheon, called the Political Parties Law of great importance for citizens and business alike, because among other aspects, “it regulates the financial resources received by parties and candidates, with absolute transparency.”
