Government advances Biofarm initiatives in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Max Puig, Executive Vice President of the National Council for Climate Change (CNCCMDL), warned that climate change is already affecting key agricultural sectors in the Dominican Republic, including bananas, cocoa, and coffee. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and extreme weather events are reducing productivity, increasing pests and diseases, and destabilizing markets.

Speaking at the Second International Meeting of the Biofincas project, Puig emphasized the urgent need for sustainable, low-carbon agricultural practices. He highlighted government initiatives such as renewable energy projects for irrigation and improved early warning systems, developed with support from the European Union and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).

Biofincas, coordinated by German organization OroVerde, promotes sustainable farming through training, financial tools, and risk management strategies in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Guatemala. The event, attended by agricultural and environmental leaders, reinforced the country’s commitment to climate action and rural resilience.
