The OAS issues a statement on the talks in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The Organization of American States early Wed. issued a statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on Venezuela:

“The Secretary-General expresses his full support for the initiative of the Government of the Dominican Republic, supported by Mr. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, former Prime Minister of Spain, to invite the Government of Venezuela and the opposition to engage in a process of political negotiation.

The Secretary-General encourages the Venezuelan political actors to seize this opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to address the country’s challenges through mediation and peaceful means.

The Secretary-General reiterates his firm conviction that the situation in Venezuela requires a political solution based on dialogue and compromise between the Government and the opposition to ensure peaceful coexistence among all Venezuelans.”
