Wrap-Up of Dominican Elections supervision in the United States
New York, US.- The Central Electoral Board (JCE) undertook a comprehensive agenda of supervision and engagements during its Plenary Session in the United States, encompassing visits to Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York. This initiative aligns with the upcoming overseas presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for May 19, 2024.
The momentous gathering, spearheaded by Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo, President of the JCE, saw the participation of regular members Rafael Armando Vallejo Santelises, Dolores Fernández, Patricia Lorenzo Paniagua, and Samir Chami Isa. Accompanying them were members of the Voting Technical Table abroad, including Directors of Elections Mario Núñez Valdez, of Informatics Johnny Rivera, and of Vote Abroad Well Sepúlveda and Lenis García from Political Parties.
The delegation held discussions with representatives from the Foreign Service Offices (OSE) and the Electoral Logistics Coordination (OCLEE), as well as engaged with accredited political party delegates, members of the Dominican community, and local leaders across the aforementioned cities.
In attendance were Directors of Communications Suedi León Jiménez, of International Relations Jorge Suncar, and of Civil Security Ángel Valentín, alongside Gabriela Pérez, secretary of the Technical Board.
President Jáquez Liranzo underscored the pivotal role of political parties and candidates in ensuring a smooth electoral process. He emphasized the imperative for them to advocate for dignity, civility, and prudence among their supporters, asserting that peace should be the overarching message.
Addressing the community abroad, Jáquez Liranzo assured the Plenary Session’s commitment to facilitating comprehensive, civic, secure, peaceful, dignified, transparent, and equitable elections. He affirmed the steadfast dedication to ensuring the democratic expression of the popular will at the polls, both domestically and internationally.
Highlighting the significance of voting rights abroad, Jáquez Liranzo celebrated the Dominican Republic’s status as one of the few countries globally to enable unrestricted voting, including parliamentary eligibility. He lauded the substantial increase in registered overseas voters, which now comprises the largest segment of the electorate, surpassing even the capital city. This, he stressed, reflects a commitment to inclusive and accessible democracy for Dominicans worldwide.
Member Chami Isa, addressing attendees in New York, emphasized the profound significance of overseas voting, fostering a vital link to the homeland, enhancing civic engagement, and fortifying the legitimacy of governance. He emphasized collaborative efforts with OSE, OCLEE, and political parties in bolstering democracy and urged them to uphold their integrity throughout the electoral process.
