Abinader welcomes Robin Bernstein’s return as Ambassador

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader welcomed the return of Robin Bernstein, former U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, expressing hope for her reappointment during a press conference held at a school in Santo Domingo Oeste. Describing Bernstein as a “great ambassador” who earned the affection of Dominicans, Abinader praised her continued visits to the country post-tenure. “She and her husband are baseball fans… she won the affection of the Dominicans, hopefully, she will return,” he remarked.

Looking ahead to U.S.-Dominican relations, Abinader expressed optimism about working with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to take office on January 20. Shifting to domestic priorities, he reaffirmed his government’s commitment to eradicating hunger by 2028. Citing FAO data, he noted that undernourishment in the Dominican Republic had decreased from 8.7% in 2020 to 4.6% in 2024, with plans to further reduce it below 2.4%. This rebutted criticism from former President Leonel Fernández, who doubted the feasibility of achieving “zero hunger” by the target year.

A big win for DR, very happy to see her back. A genuine ambassador who supports and looks out for us. Thank God the democRATS will soon be out of the picture.

As long as there are Americans like you who can’t help but take a political jab at every opportunity, you are a nation in peril. Learn to get along.

I am Dominican. Historically the DR has faired better relations with the US when Republicans are the ones governing. Am I politically biased? Sure.. but I can tell you most Americans want a change in leadership hence the recent election results.

This is a somewhat misleading headline, I think. She has not been re-appointed as Ambassador, and President Luis Abinader was only “expressing hope for her reappointment”. Until Donald Trump takes office on January 20th, there is no possibility of anyone being appointed. It does seem a little strange that the U.S. did not appear to think it necessary to have an Ambassador, but maybe that will change with a different President in the White House.
