Residents of the community of Villa Salma in Samaná drew attention to the death of the fish.
The Dominican Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Codopesca) clarified that the leading cause of the death of fish in this locality of Samaná was due to a short circuit that turned off the aeration devices and pointed out that this situation has occurred on other occasions.
Codopesca indicated that a team of its collaborators visited, together with technicians from the National Institute of Potable Water and Sewage (INAPA), in response to a local complaint about the recent fish mortality in the area.
“After verifying the ponds that are used to manage the wastewater discharged by the town, it was determined that the main cause of the death of the fish in the area was due to a short circuit that turned off the aeration devices. It should be noted that this situation has occurred on other occasions,” explained Codopesca in a statement sent to the media.
The institution clarified that the fish were introduced to contribute to the decomposition process of the waste handled in said plant and are not fit for human consumption.
“That is to say, it is a population of fish that have reproduced naturally and are basically there to fulfill a specific function,” the entity clarified.
Codopesca reiterated its commitment to adequately supervising and regulating the different bodies of inland waters during high temperatures that affect the entire national territory.
