Red Flag on beaches of Puerto Plata due to heavy swell

Puerto Plata – The Civil Defense reported that due to the weather conditions reported by the National Meteorological Office (Onamet), the firm swell of 5 to 7 feet, and abnormal sea currents on the Atlantic coast, a red flag will be placed on all the beaches of Puerto Plata’s coastline.

On the other hand, the agency established a yellow flag for the beaches of Bahia, Punta Rusia, and La Ensenada. Because of their geographical location and natural protection, the waves do not affect them directly.

It urged the population to stay informed and abide by the authorities’ instructions to avoid risky situations.

“As preventive measures to guarantee life, bathing is prohibited in the various beach resorts with red flags in the province of Puerto Plata. For the Yellow Flag beaches, bathing is allowed under the supervision of Guarda Vida personnel and safety equipment for swimming,” says the agency.

Onamet also recommended that operators of fragile, small, and medium-sized boats sailing from Cabo San Rafael (La Altagracia) to Cabo Samaná (Samaná) remain in port. At the same time, on the rest of the Atlantic and Caribbean coast, navigate cautiously near the coastal perimeter without venturing offshore due to wind and abnormal waves.

According to the entity, a trough associated with a frontal system located in the central portion of Cuba began impacting the area on Friday afternoon. For this reason, there will be an increase in cloudiness with scattered showers and wind gusts in towns in the northeast, southeast, and the Central Cordillera, mainly La Altagracia, La Romana, San Pedro de Macoris, Monte Plata, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, San Cristobal, and El Gran Santo Domingo, among others. These precipitations will be primarily present until early evening.
