Santo Domingo.- “We may not have oil, but we have a stronger economy than Venezuela,” responded President Luis Abinader to threats made by Venezuela’s Minister of the Interior, Justice, and Peace, Diosdado Cabello. Abinader acknowledged concern over Venezuela’s situation but emphasized that he is not intimidated by Cabello’s remarks.
On Thursday, Cabello issued a warning to the Dominican government, referencing the country’s energy dependence on oil and bluntly stating, “I’ll catch you on the low, we are the ones who have oil.”
In his response, Abinader also expressed worry over Venezuela’s political climate, particularly the recent arrest warrant for the main opposition candidate. He reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s support for OAS resolutions and stressed the importance of a hemispheric solution, backed by the United Nations, to uphold democracy in the region.
The president made these remarks during a press conference following a private meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
