Plane carrying Edmundo González to Spain makes stop at Las Américas Airport

Santo Domingo.- The Spanish Air Force plane carrying Edmundo González Urrutia, the standard-bearer of Venezuela’s Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), landed at 10:29 a.m. (8:29 GMT) at Lajes airport, located on the island of Terceira in Portugal’s Azores archipelago. The flight’s status was confirmed through flight tracking websites, Flight Aware and Air Nav.

The Dassault Falcon F900 aircraft had departed nearly six hours earlier from Las Américas International Airport in the Dominican Republic, after González Urrutia arrived from Venezuela. Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, confirmed that González Urrutia was en route to Spain, where he will be granted asylum. Albares made this statement during a stop in Oman on his way to China with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Albares also mentioned that González Urrutia personally requested asylum, which Spain will process and approve. González Urrutia, now on his way to Spain, expressed his gratitude to Albares for Spain’s support. Prime Minister Sánchez had previously praised González Urrutia as “a hero whom Spain will not abandon” during a Socialist Party meeting.
