Hearing on injunction to halt coal-fired power plants set for Jan. 18

Santo Domingo.- The SuperiorAdministrative Court 3rd Chamber set a hearing for 18 January on an environmentalprotection injunction filed against the two coal-fired power plants at PuntaCatalina, Bani (south).

The court ruling allowsboth parties involved to examine the case files.

A group of communityorganizations led by the National Committee to Combat Climate Change and theAssociation to Protect against Environment Change filed the lawsuit that seeksto halt the power plants´ construction.

Both organizations saidif the plants were to use natural gas instead of coal Dominican taxpayerswould´ve saved a third of the originally stipulated cost.

Enrique de León, of theNational Committee to Combat Climate Change, also rejects the private sector´sparticipation in the project as president Danilo Medina has suggested.
