American Chamber to host panel ‘Populism vs. Republic’

Santo Domingo.- The American Chamber of Commerce will hosta Business breakfast on "Populism vs Republic" with the participationof Gloria Alvarez, a political scientist and communicator of Guatemala.

Alvarez has been called a hemispheric phenomenon from her articlesand videos which have gone viral, prompting a constructive dialogue not only inGuatemala but throughout the region, on what it means to be a responsiblecitizen in a democratic republic.

The event will address the implications and consequences ofpopulism in Latin America, the importance of raising awareness of government agencies,as the basis of a market economy and analysis of the Dominican context of thepolitical undercurrent.

Alvarez will also form part of a panel to discussion on howthose regional trends are playing out in the Dominican Republic, with theexperts including National Civic Movement president Rodrigo Arenas, sociologistRosario Espinal and prominent attorney Servio Tulio Castaños, to be moderatedby AMCHAM Legal Committee president Maria Esther Fernandez.

“2016 is an election year so it’s an opportunity to openthe debate on the importance of creating awareness among the voting population thattheir vote is an exercise to assess government proposals and develop plans inkey areas of the country.”
