Dominican Republic certified against freight risks, illegal trade

Santo Domingo.- The internationalcertification issued by the Business Alliance for Secure Commerce (BASC) to theDominican Republic establishes a robust system of control and securitymanagement in companies, based on risks and proactive controls to mitigate contaminationof freight and illegal trade .

Local BASC chapter president Erik Alma madethe statment Wednesday to open the 10th Annual Dominican BASC Conference: RiskManagement: Key for safe international trade.

US ambassador James W. Brewster and US Customsofficials presented the international security certifications under BASC rule27 related to companies involved in international trade.

Alma said BASC seeks to make the businesscommunity aware of the importance of risk management and its impact as a commonfactor for competitiveness in international trade. "BASC seeks toencourage public-private partnerships between union representatives and allactors in the supply chain in terms of global norms and standards."

Among the exhibitors figured officials of theUS National Targeting Center of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), who showedparticipants the techniques for handling confidential information and freightcontamination and representatives of the United Nations Crime and Drugs Program(UNODC), who spoke about the control of containers and the recent commissioningof the airfreight project.

Also presented were representatives of HainaInternational Terminals – HIT and DP World Caucedo, the Overseas SecurityAdvisory Council (OSAC), the technical group on trade facilitation WorldCustoms Organization (WCO), the World BASC Organization (WBO) and of theNational Drugs Control Agency (DNCD), who addressed updated technical safetyissues to mitigate risks and facilitate trade.
