Santo Domingo.- The governments of the Dominican Republic and China on Mon. jointly announced the establishment of diplomatic relations, which in turn breaks a bond of over 75 years between the latter and Taiwan.
“The Government of the Dominican Republic recognizes that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory,” said Executive Branch legal advisor, Flavio Darío Espinal in Santo Domingo, after noting as a determining factor the trade potential with China, “the second supplier of our imports.”
In a statement, Santo Domingo expressed gratitude to Taiwan, whose support paved the way for “the development of programs of great importance for our country,” adding that “history and socioeconomic reality now force us to change course.”
