Trade with DR a top priority in Washington’s agenda

R. Copley. File

Santo Domingo.- US interim ambassador Robert Copley said Tues. that the priorities in Washington’s agenda with the Dominican Republic are trade relations, security, energy, health and education.

“These have been recognized as pillars in the new strategy that was recently approved by the US Congress in its formal commitment to the Caribbean region,” Copley said in his first official address in the country.

Accompanied by his wife Yanira, Copley noted the recent visit of a group of members of the US Congress, including Dominican-born Adriano Espaillat, to verify how the implementation of the new US strategy in its bilateral relations is working.

The diplomat’s speech marks a departure from the agenda of former US ambassador James W. Brewster, in which the focus was shifted away from issues such as security, drug trafficking and trade.
