US deports Dominican drug convicts in darkness: Special prosecutor

Santo Domingo.- Anti-Money Laundering prosecutor Germán Miranda on Monday complained that US authorities deport in the wee hours ex convicts who’ve serves drug trafficking sentences, a situation he affirms hinders the flow of information.

He said Dominican authorities await those deportees to exert greater control and assess their actual situation. "We want those people brought to us so that we have better control here, so we can assess their situation."

He said he asked US authorities for legal cooperation in the drug trafficking case linked to Ernesto Guevara Diaz (Maconi), recently deported from Puerto Rico rafter serving his sentence.

He said he sought the information to establish the charges, his sentence and plea bargaining with authorities, but in his view have faced difficulties in getting those details.

He said all of Guevara’s assets have already been identified and only await legal cooperation to then continue the legal proceeding against him.

The official, speaking after taking part in the Central American Security Strategy regional meeting for prosecutors taking place until December 12, said "Maconi" is disposing of assets which have been identified together with those of his wife and his associates.
