UN asks Dominican Republic to guarantee defense of human rights

Santo Domingo.- As partof the celebration of Human Rights Day, Lorenzo Jimenez de Luis, UN ResidentCoordinator in the Dominican Republic, lauded as important advances in the country´sachievements in the fight against poverty, higher budget for education and the materializationof the National Plan of Action on HumanRights.

"However, itrequires that such measures be enacted by robust institutions with clearmandates and assume positions of guarantees when defending human rights," Jimenezsaid.

The UN official spoke tomark United Nations Human Rights Day on December 10, at the DominicanResistance Memorial Museum, attended by government officials, foreign diplomatsand representatives of civil society organizations.

This year, under theslogan "Our Rights. Our liberties. Always," Human Rights Daycelebrates the International Pact on Civil and Political Rights and theInternational Agreement on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, approved in1966.
