Group suspends anticorruption protests on mayor´s death

Santo Domingo.- Thegrassroots movement Poder Ciudadano (Citizen Power) on Wednesday said it hassuspended the "human chains" against corruption which it organizes throughoutthe country.

It said the decisionstems from the murder of Santo Domingo Este mayor Juan de los Santos.

The organization, in theannouncement made at a press conference in the offices of the Dominican MedicalAssociation, said it will start to evaluate and reflect on their struggle,leading to next year´s general elections.

Speaking for CitizenPower, Ara Ena Martinez and Jesus Adon said they’ll host a national assembly onSunday with representatives from towns where "human chains" were held,to establish the next steps for next year.

They said the protests whichtook place against corruption were successful and called on the population to reflecton the country´s corruption during the holidays, and to fight it by demanding moretransparency.
