Cabarete ex-mayors get 2 years for embezzling US$3.7M
Gregorio Antonio Mora (Canoa)
Puerto Plata.- The Justice Ministry on Mon. announced the arrests of former mayors of Cabarete, Gabriel Antonio Mora (Canoa), and Eddy Ramón Morfe, after a two-year prison sentence was upheld for embezzling RD$185.0 million (US$3.7 million) during the 2004-2010 period.
The Anticorruption Prosecutor (PEPCA) obtained a Supreme Court ruling handed down last June, which sentenced both to two years in prison last year.
The Puerto Plata Court of Appeals had sentenced Mora and Morfe last year, after overturning a Collegiate Court ruling which had acquitted the two.
In a statement, the Justice Ministry said Mora and Morfe were charged with prevarication, embezzlement, criminal conspiracy and forgery, violating several articles of the Dominican Penal Code.
