Carnival celebration in Salcedo ends in tragedy

Salcedo, DR.- A distressing incident unfolded during the carnival celebration in Salcedo, leaving over 15 individuals, including more than 10 children, with severe burns, as confirmed by Salcedo authorities.

The unfortunate incident occurred within a group’s cave, where fireworks were launched, resulting in a mishap. Witnesses recount that the flames engulfed the costumes worn by those participating in the show, quickly spiraling out of control.

As a consequence, more than 10 children have been admitted to private healthcare facilities in both Santiago and Santo Domingo, while several adults are receiving medical attention in Salcedo’s health centers.

In response to the emergency, the Fire Department dispatched a unit along with multiple ambulances to the scene, facilitating the prompt transportation of the affected individuals.

Local civil authorities, including Mayor María Ortiz and Deputy Félix Hiciano, are actively involved in coordinating efforts to ensure that those harmed receive necessary care in clinical centers. Mayor Ortiz expressed her shock and regret over the incident, expressing her readiness to take responsibility for the local government’s role in the matter.

The Salcedo carnival, intended to be a joyous occasion, has now become marked by tragedy, leaving the community in sorrow as they grapple with the aftermath of this unfortunate incident involving the burning of several children due to a fireworks mishap.

This is tragic, hoping the victims recover well and soon.

It is a very risky mix of fireworks in close proximity to ignitable clothing and other combustibles. It is something that is ignored in the excitement of the festivities.
