Fire breaks out at La Victoria Penitentiary

Santo Domingo.- Six inmates and two members of the Fire Department received medical attention at the Dr. Ney Arias Lora Traumatological Hospital following a fire at the La Victoria National Penitentiary, three lost their lives.

Julio Landrón, the general director of the health center, stated that seven individuals affected by smoke inhalation were admitted for observation. Among those hospitalized, two have burns covering one and two percent of their body surface.

“Two members of the fire department, aged 19 and 20, respectively, were admitted due to smoke inhalation, experiencing symptoms typical of carbon monoxide exposure, such as chest pain, respiratory distress, and headache. Both are in stable condition,” the statement noted.

Medical professionals at Ney Arias Lora, including those at the Burns Unit, confirmed that the admitted patients are in stable condition.

Tragically, three inmates lost their lives in the fire at the La Victoria National Penitentiary. According to the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC), these deaths were attributed to smoke inhalation, with one inmate passing away at the Dr. Ney Arias Lora Traumatological Hospital and the other two at the La Victoria facility.

The DGSPC statement attributed the accident to a short circuit.
