“Government must act without hesitation in the face of Haitian provocation and defend our water resources”

New York. – Presidential candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado expressed in this city his total repudiation of the unilateral commissioning of the canal built by Haitians by diverting the waters of the Dajabón River.
“We reiterate our rejection and condemnation of the unilateral construction and commissioning of the Masacre River diversion canal by Haitian groups,” he insisted. “We ratify the call to the government to appeal, without hesitation and with firmness, to the diplomatic instances to defend that water resource,” he continued.

For the also president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) “the erratic actions of the Dominican government, by signing in 2021 an agreement of understanding with Haiti, enabling it to build the work, calls for an immediate rectification, on the basis of enforcing the 1929 pact on the use of binational water resources.”

He added that “in no way should a contemplative and irresponsible attitude be maintained in the face of this situation which, in the first instance, severely affects the flow of the river”. Vargas explained that the same limits water to the producers of Dajabón and surrounding areas.

“As Dominicans and the country most affected by the serious crisis in Haiti, we must have a broad and comprehensive plan for the short, medium and long term that guarantees our territorial security and contributes to respectful and collaborative relations with that nation,” he said.

Vargas Maldonado expressed himself in these terms upon his arrival in the Big Apple. Here he plans to develop for several days a busy agenda of meetings with the Perredeista family in the first District in the United States.
