Democratic Option urges stronger protections for Dominicans facing deportation

Santo Domingo.- The Democratic Option (OD) party has called on the Dominican government to take immediate action to protect Dominicans in the U.S., particularly those in vulnerable situations. The party emphasized the need for consular support for individuals facing deportation, immigration challenges, or legal status issues.

Ángel Bogaert, OD’s representative in New York, stressed the importance of a comprehensive platform to assist deported Dominicans with legal aid and economic reintegration. He highlighted the diaspora’s vital role in the Dominican economy, with remittances contributing over 10% of GDP. Bogaert also condemned recent deportations in Puerto Rico, calling for dignified treatment of affected individuals.

With thousands of Dominicans at risk due to expiring permits and shifting U.S. immigration policies, OD reaffirmed its commitment to defending their rights. The party urged authorities to act decisively to prevent further hardship for Dominican migrants.

These are the same policies as are in effect in DR. If you are in the country illegally you are returned to your home country immediately if you have any criminal history. Unfortunately, once you overstay your authorized length of stay you have violated federal law and are subject to return to home country. I doubt if there are any provisions to treat citizens of the DR any differently from any other country. Best defense…don’t stay illegally.
