“Media pressure” brought Luis Rubiales to Punta Cana

Madrid, Spain.- Agents conducting a search last week at the residence where the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, and his associate Francisco Javier Martín Alcaide, known as ‘Nene’, were staying in Punta Cana, seized several items including seven cell phones, various storage devices, a Rolex watch, and bank documents.

Rubiales reportedly informed a witness that he relocated to Punta Cana due to media pressure in Spain. Both Rubiales and Martín Alcaide were arrested and subsequently released upon their return to Spain after the search. Rubiales is scheduled to testify before the magistrate on April 29.

On April 1, agents searched the residence in Punta Cana where they resided, as well as their vehicles—a white 2016 Porsche purchased by Rubiales on March 8 and a Chevrolet Tahoe owned by Nene, according to documents from the Dominican Public Ministry detailing the seized items.

Among the seized items were two bank transfer receipts for Rubiales’ Porsche, totaling $36,802, along with seven cell phones, four of which were iPhones, storage devices, and a silver Rolex watch.

The magistrate overseeing the investigation into alleged irregularities in contracts during Rubiales’ tenure at the RFEF issued the rogatory commission to the Dominican Republic at the request of the Civil Guard, deeming it crucial to gather evidence. The judge also requested to freeze their assets, suspecting that Martín Alcaide and Rubiales may have used others, including Martín Alcaide’s wife, as proxies for their economic activities.

The investigation primarily focuses on RFEF contracts, particularly with the construction company Gruconsa for projects such as the La Cartuja stadium in Seville. Payments for these contracts are suspected to have been directed to Dismantec, a company allegedly controlled by Nene, with possible benefits flowing to Rubiales.

The judge is also probing Rubiales’ integration into Martín Alcaide’s corporate network, suspecting the creation of companies in Spain and the Dominican Republic to obscure the origins of funds received by Dismantec, possibly involving the use of Martín Alcaide’s wife and a third party.
