ECLAC and UNISDR join forces to bolster disaster assessment capacity in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Economic Commissionfor Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is partnering with the UnitedNations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) in itseffort to strengthen the ability of countries across Latin America and theCaribbean to manage the impacts of disasters, in the context of the SendaiFramework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

The first collaborationbetween ECLAC and UNISDR will be through a two-day training targeting membersof the United Nations Development Group for Latin America and the Caribbean(UNDG LAC), and will take place on 18-19 February in Panama City, Panama. Thetraining will inform participants of the complexities of a disaster, howdifferent sectors might be impacted, and how to use the damage and lossassessment methodology affectively in a timely manner.

By pooling theknowledge and tools developed by each organization, ECLAC and UNISDR will jointlyenhance their support to countries affected by natural disasters in determiningtheir path to recovery and reconstruction, and incorporating future measures toreduce vulnerabilities and increase resilience.
