Santo Domingo.- The Embassy of the United Kingdom has announced that applications for Chevening Scholarships via www.chevening.org/apply are being accepted by the Chevening Scholarships Progamme Secretariat from 8 August until 8 November 2016.

Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals withdemonstrable leadership potential who also have strong academic backgrounds. The scholarship offers financial support to study for a master’s degree at anyUK university and the opportunity to become part of an influential globalnetwork of 46,000 alumni. Priority areas are Journalism, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Agriculture, Education, Sustainable Development, Governance, Rule of Law and Mining Industries.

The call for new applicants follows the selection of eight scholars from the Dominican Republic who won an award to study at a UK university in 2016/17.

Some 1,500 Chevening Scholarships are on offer globally for the 2016-2017 academic year. These scholarships represent a significant investment from theUK Government to develop the next cohort of global leaders.

The UK Ambassador, Chris Campbell, said:

"The United Kingdom is home to many of the world’s best universities and Chevening helps them to develop in the academic, professional and personal sphere while studying in the United Kingdom.

Chevening scholars become recognized leader who belong to a global network of influential people. They are empowered with a strong sense of pride and responsibility.

They share the best that their country has to offer with the people they meet in the United Kingdom and then they share the best the United Kingdom has to offer when they return home. For this reason, the role of the Chevening Scholars is important for building bridges between both countries."

TheDirector of the Chevening Secretariat, Michael Scott-Kline, said:

"Thosewho step forward to apply for a Chevening Scholarship are already demonstratingthe kind of ambitious forward-thinking that typifies CheveningScholars.

The potential rewards for applying are unquantifiable. Not onlydo scholars receive a first-rate UK education which can open doors in theirrespective careers, they also join a strong global network — a network theywill draw on and contribute to for the rest of their lives.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the 2017/2018 period has been opened. Applying – or encouraging a friend to apply – may turn out to bethe best decision you ever make. Everyone who has ever benefitted from being aChevening Scholar has one thing in common — they had the ambition to simplyapply."
