Audit praises Punta Catalina for sustainability and community initiatives
Punta Catalina.- The international consultancy RINA released its November 2024 audit report on the Punta Catalina Electricity Generating Company (EGEPC), praising advancements in environmental, social, and operational management while identifying areas for improvement. The plant was commended for adhering to environmental and social regulations, maintaining greenhouse gas emissions below international standards, and achieving operational stability that has eased political tensions.
The report recognized EGEPC’s strengthened communication with local communities, reduced complaint response times, and social initiatives such as organic gardens, housing upgrades for vulnerable groups, and support for Batey San José. Plans for renewable energy projects, including a solar park and wind turbines, further underscored its commitment to sustainability.
RINA also highlighted effective ash yard management, transparency in financial reporting, and coal handling practices aligned with global standards. Recommendations included infrastructure optimization to enhance operations and community benefits. Overall, RINA lauded EGEPC’s efforts toward responsible development and innovation.
