Leonel claims Government used $775 million from Aerodom contract for reelection
Santo Domingo.- Former President Leonel Fernández, leader of Fuerza del Pueblo, accused the government of using $775 million from the renegotiation of Aerodom’s contract to fund President Luis Abinader’s reelection campaign instead of delivering promised infrastructure projects. He highlighted delays in paving La Caleta and constructing a trauma hospital in San Cristóbal, questioning the transparency of the funds’ use.
Fernández criticized the extension of Aerodom’s contract by 37 years, from 2030 to 2060, labeling it an “opaque operation” with electoral motivations. He noted that 21,769 million pesos, half of the Aerodom funds, were allocated to the Ministry of the Presidency, which exhausted its annual budget by June, leaving Public Works underfunded and projects stalled.
Of the 80 sports infrastructure projects promised, Fernández claimed only 24 are slated for execution. He accused President Abinader of creating false expectations with unfulfilled development promises and called for transparency in government spending.
