The endangered cross bill

Santo Domingo. -Unlike other birds, the cross bill, an endemic species of Hispaniola, is distinguished from any other by its thick bill with crossed jaws, to whose characteristic its common name is due.

The tips of the beak are crossed over each other to facilitate the extraction of the seeds or of the pine cones.

Its range spans the Sierra de Bahoruco National Park.
