OAS convenes emergency session to address mass deportations of Haitians from the Dominican Republic

Washington.- The president of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Lynn Raymond Young, convened an extraordinary session to address the mass deportations of Haitians from the Dominican Republic. The meeting was requested by the Permanent Mission of Haiti to review the conditions faced by migrants in the Dominican Republic and is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. in the Libertador Simón Bolívar Hall at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The session comes in response to the Dominican government’s recent announcement to repatriate up to 10,000 undocumented foreigners weekly, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Haitian authorities, who view it as a violation of their citizens’ human rights.

Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille expressed concern over the situation and announced the formation of a task force to address the deportees’ needs. He also intends to intensify diplomatic efforts to engage with Dominican and international officials, condemning the measures as an affront to human dignity and fundamental rights.

The Dominican government has the right to expel illegals from its territory. But it must do so while respecting human rights. It is 2024. Also, it must ensure that the Haitians expelled do not actually have legal status.
