5.4-magnitude earthquake rattles San José and Central Costa Rica

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck central Costa Rica early Monday, followed minutes later by another strong tremor, shaking San José and surrounding communities. No deaths or serious injuries were reported, while authorities recorded only minor damage.

The first earthquake occurred at 1:37 a.m. local time, with its epicenter in Vásquez de Coronado, northeast of San José. The National Seismological Network (RSN) recorded it at magnitude 5.4 and a depth of about 7 kilometers, while other institutions reported slightly different measurements.

About two minutes later, a second earthquake struck the same area. Its magnitude was initially reported at 4.8, while later readings placed it closer to 4.5. Several smaller aftershocks followed throughout the early morning.

The shallow depth of the earthquakes caused strong shaking across parts of the Central Valley, including San José, Moravia, Tres Ríos, Hatillo and Alajuela.

The National Emergency Commission initially reported no damage before receiving reports of a damaged perimeter wall at a residence in Vásquez de Coronado and a fallen electrical pole in San Vicente de Moravia. Firefighters and the Costa Rican Red Cross reported no major damage.

Seismologist Marino Protti of OVSICORI said approximately 30 aftershocks had been recorded by 3:30 a.m. Authorities warned that additional tremors could occur over the coming hours or days, although most are expected to be weaker.
