Karpowership consolidates its energy contribution in Latin America and the Caribbean
Karpowership, owner of the world’s only fleet of floating power plants and operator of 45 Powerships with more than 8,500 MW of installed capacity on four continents, announced its entry into the Mexican market through a 250 megawatt (MW) project that will contribute to strengthening the electrical subsystem of the Yucatan Peninsula, one of the areas with the highest growth in energy demand in that country.
This new project represents a significant step in the company’s expansion in Latin America and the Caribbean, a region where Karpowership has strengthened its presence in strategic markets facing challenges associated with growing demand, the need for flexible generation, the resilience of electrical systems, and the progressive integration of renewable sources.
The initiative in Mexico will be developed in coordination with the authorities of the Mexican energy sector and the Government of Quintana Roo.
The company will install a Powership alongside a liquefied natural gas terminal vessel under an integrated “LNG-to-Power” scheme, enabling dispatchable energy to be supplied quickly, flexibly, and reliably.
Karpowership’s arrival in Mexico responds to the accelerated economic and population growth of the Yucatan Peninsula, driven by tourism, urban expansion, and infrastructure development.
The project is designed to support the electrical grid during peak demand, hurricane seasons, and maintenance periods, using marine infrastructure that can be deployed within months and relocated as needed.
In the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic remains one of the company’s most important markets. Currently, Karpowership has a total installed capacity of 408 MW in the country, equivalent to approximately 10% of the national firm capacity, enough to provide electricity to more than one million Dominicans.
Since its operations in Azua, the company has contributed to the stability and resilience of the Dominican electrical system, providing flexible generation amid sustained demand growth, economic expansion, tourism development, and the gradual integration of renewable energy.
Its presence in the country is part of a regional strategy to support electrical systems with fast-deployment, high-availability solutions.
The company has also strengthened its presence in Ecuador, where it increased its generation capacity to 300 MW to support the country during the energy crisis caused by drought and reduced hydroelectric capacity.
These operations demonstrate Karpowership’s role as an energy partner in markets that require timely responses to high-demand situations, weather contingencies, or limitations in conventional generation.
Globally, Karpowership develops floating energy solutions that integrate power generation, maritime infrastructure, and natural gas supply, enabling rapid response to the needs of countries and electrical systems undergoing transformation.
With its entry into Mexico and its consolidated presence in markets such as the Dominican Republic and Ecuador, Karpowership continues to strengthen its position in Latin America and the Caribbean as a flexible alternative to support energy security, the stability of electrical systems, and regional economic development.
