Punta Cana traffic jams now last up to an hour, Senator says

Verón-Punta Cana.-  Senator Rafael Barón Duluc warned that traffic congestion in Punta Cana has reached critical levels, describing the situation as even worse than in Santo Domingo due to kilometer-long traffic jams in areas such as Verón-Punta Cana and Downtown Punta Cana. He said the worsening conditions have become so severe that residents and businesses are considering relocating from the area.

The legislator explained that trips from Punta Cana International Airport to nearby hotels, which previously took around 10 minutes, can now take up to 40 minutes or even an hour during peak traffic periods. He also noted that the private sector was forced to finance the construction of an overpass because traffic congestion had become unmanageable, even in the region’s main tourist zones.

Duluc backed recent comments made by tourism businessman Frank Rainieri regarding infrastructure and traffic problems in the area, saying the concerns are legitimate and reflect reality. He stressed that the issue goes beyond La Altagracia province and should be viewed as a national problem linked to poor urban planning and the rapid growth of the country’s tourism hub.
