Dominican government delivers equipment to combat sargassum on Boca Chica beaches
Boca Chica.- The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism has delivered 42 pieces of heavy equipment to Boca Chica to strengthen efforts against the annual influx of sargassum that affects the area’s beaches and tourism sector. The equipment includes 30 trucks, six tractors, and six beach sweepers aimed at improving cleanup and maintenance operations along the popular coastal destination.
During the handover ceremony, Tourism Minister David Collado emphasized that the distribution of resources was carried out without political considerations, noting that mayors from different political parties, including the opposition, were among the beneficiaries. He stressed that support for local governments should prioritize community needs over partisan interests.
Sargassum has become one of the most significant environmental challenges facing Boca Chica, impacting beach conditions, tourism activity, and the livelihoods of hundreds of families who depend on the destination’s visitor economy. Authorities said the new equipment will enhance the response capacity of local governments and help keep beaches clean and attractive for both residents and tourists.
