Duartian Institute honors Ramón Matías Mella on 162nd anniversary of his death
Santo Domingo.- The Duartian Institute commemorated the 162nd anniversary of the death of Dominican hero Ramón Matías Mella with a floral tribute at the Altar of the Fatherland in Santo Domingo. The ceremony honored Mella’s decisive role in the country’s independence and the Restoration War against Spanish annexation.
During the event, Institute President Wilson Gómez Ramírez highlighted Mella’s leadership, courage, and military strategy, noting that he stepped forward to advance the Trinitarian movement when Juan Pablo Duarte was absent. He also recalled Mella’s mission to secure support from Haitian liberal leader Charles Hérard, a key step in the Dominican independence project.
The Institute emphasized Mella’s lasting contributions, including his authorship of the Guerrilla Warfare Manual during the Restoration War and his historic firing of the trabucazo at the Puerta de la Misericordia, a symbolic act that signaled the start of Dominican independence. Speakers also remembered the emotional final meeting between Duarte and Mella in 1864, when the ailing patriot requested to be buried wrapped in the Dominican flag. The tribute underscored Mella’s enduring legacy as one of the nation’s most important founding heroes.
