Heavy rain threat prompts green alert in eight areas across Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center has extended a green alert for seven provinces and the National District as a trough, combined with the remnants of a tropical wave and local weather conditions, increases the likelihood of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong wind gusts across several regions of the country.

The provinces under alert are Santiago Rodríguez, Puerto Plata, Santiago, Dajabón, San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo and the National District. According to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology, the weather system is expected to generate moderate to locally heavy showers, particularly along the Caribbean coast, the northern and northwestern regions, the Central Mountain Range and border areas.

Authorities warned that provinces including La Altagracia, San Pedro de Macorís, Monte Plata, Barahona, La Vega, Espaillat, Valverde and Monseñor Nouel could also experience significant rainfall. The COE urged residents in vulnerable areas near rivers, streams and ravines to take precautionary measures against possible flooding and flash floods.

Officials also advised the public to avoid crossing swollen waterways and refrain from using recreational areas located in zones affected by the alert. Juan Manuel Méndez García called on citizens to follow official weather updates and guidance from emergency authorities as conditions continue to be monitored.
