Energy storage ETED paves the way for private investment to strengthen the Dominican electrical system

The Dominican Electricity Transmission Company, SA (ETED) is making progress in structuring the technical, financial, and legal guidelines that will enable private investment in battery energy storage systems (BESS), a strategic technology to strengthen the stability, flexibility, and responsiveness of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI).

The initiative is part of the vision promoted by the management of engineer Alfonso Rodríguez Tejada, executive vice president of ETED, aimed at preparing the transmission network for the new challenges of the Dominican electrical system: greater demand, increasing integration of renewable energies, need for rapid response to operational variations, and an infrastructure increasingly demanded by the country’s economic growth.

BESS systems allow energy to be stored when available and released when the system requires it, thereby helping stabilize the grid, optimize electrical operations, improve the integration of renewable sources, and strengthen the security of supply.

Following up on the exchanges initiated during the information session held with SENI agents on investment in battery energy storage, ETED is in the process of contracting specialized technical assistance to support the validation of scenarios, the definition of criteria, and the design of the mechanisms that will serve as the basis for a future competitive phase.

The specialized firm will interact with the ETED BESS Working Group, model integration scenarios for this technology, evaluate priority services for the system, and weigh the contributions received from the private sector during the first call for expressions of interest.

According to preliminary analyses, the initiative contemplates an estimated reference dimension of up to 600 MW / 1,200 MWh of energy storage, under modular and scalable schemes, aimed at strengthening the operation of the SENI and supporting the national energy transformation.
