U.S. Ambassador hosts Dominican delegation aboard USS Nimitz
San Isidro Air Base.- A high-level Dominican government delegation visited the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) aircraft carrier during its Southern Seas 2026 deployment in the Caribbean, reinforcing bilateral cooperation and security ties between the Dominican Republic and the United States.
The visit was hosted by U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic Leah Campos and representatives of U.S. Southern Command. The Dominican delegation included Tourism Minister David Collado, Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, DNCD President Vice Admiral José Manuel Cabrera Ulloa, DNI Executive Director Luis Soto, and other civilian and military officials, including members of the Armed Forces General Staff.
The activity began at San Isidro Air Base before the delegation was transported to the USS Nimitz, where they were welcomed by Captain Joseph J. Furco, commander of one of the U.S. Navy’s most prominent aircraft carriers. During a guided tour of the vessel, Dominican authorities met with U.S. naval leaders and gained firsthand knowledge of the ship’s capabilities, operations, and strategic role within the U.S. fleet.
Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Campos highlighted the strong relationship between the two countries and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in key areas.
“The bond between the United States and the Dominican Republic is strong,” Campos said. “Our collaboration on security, trade, economic development, and people-to-people relations contributes to a safer and more prosperous future for both our nations.”
She added that the visit to the USS Nimitz reflects the United States’ ongoing commitment to working alongside its Dominican partners to address shared challenges and promote stability throughout the region.
According to officials, the visit took place in an atmosphere of cordiality and cooperation, further strengthening the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between the Dominican Republic and the United States.
