Docalsa says environmental project focuses on restoration, not mining

Santo Domingo.- Dominicana de Cales S.A. (Docalsa) defended its environmental remediation project in an area previously affected by mining activities, stressing that the initiative does not involve new mineral extraction but rather ecological restoration and land recovery efforts.

According to the company, the project covers more than 86,000 square meters and focuses on stabilizing terrain, revegetation, and restoring degraded ecosystems. As part of the plan, more than 50,000 trees will be planted to help recover environmental balance in the area. Docalsa noted that the initiative was reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Environment and is limited exclusively to remediation activities.

The company also stated that its operations are conducted outside the protected core and buffer zones established by the government, and that any work carried out in authorized buffer areas is strictly related to the environmental restoration plan. In response to concerns about potential impacts on the so-called Tandem Cave, Docalsa said the project was designed using technical criteria to safeguard natural resources and is being executed without explosives under environmental supervision.

Addressing concerns over water contamination, the company maintained that there are no rivers within the intervention area and that its operations do not generate wastewater discharges, as they rely on dry processes. Water use, it said, is limited to irrigation for reforestation efforts. Docalsa reaffirmed that all activities comply with environmental regulations and remain under the oversight of the relevant authorities.
