Duartian Institute calls for defense of sovereignty during UN Secretary-General visit

Santo Domingo.- Wilson Gómez Ramírez, president of the Instituto Duartiano, expressed concern over the visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and urged Dominican authorities to firmly defend national sovereignty in any discussions related to migration policy.

Speaking during a ceremony commemorating the 232nd anniversary of María Trinidad Sánchez, Gómez argued that the United Nations has frequently criticized the Dominican Republic’s measures to control irregular migration and repatriate Haitian nationals. He maintained that any dialogue with international organizations should prioritize respect for Dominican laws and sovereign decision-making.

The remarks were made during a wreath-laying ceremony in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City honoring María Trinidad Sánchez. Gómez highlighted her role in the independence movement, recalling her support for the La Trinitaria and her refusal to betray fellow patriots despite facing execution. He said her legacy should inspire future generations to strengthen their knowledge of Dominican history and uphold national sovereignty.
