What causes the intense heat that occurs at dawn and dusk in the Dominican Republic?
Meteorological analyst Jean Suriel warned that a sweltering heat dome has settled over the Caribbean region, generating extreme temperatures and a heat index of up to 43 degrees Celsius in several locations across the country.
The alert comes one day before the official start of summer 2026. It coincides with three other atmospheric phenomena that intensify the outlook: the sixth Saharan dust cloud affecting the national territory, the impact of El Niño, and the cumulative effects of climate change.
Suriel explained that the combination of these factors is creating an unbearable environment, with risks to the health of the population, especially children, older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions.
The specialist recommended that citizens stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm, and wear light, breathable clothing. He also called on authorities to strengthen prevention campaigns and monitor the effects of this heatwave on the country’s daily and productive activities.
