Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader congratulated Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella following his apparent lead in the preliminary results of Colombia’s presidential elections, according to electoral authorities.
In a message posted on social media, Abinader expressed his “sincere congratulations” and highlighted what he described as a democratic electoral process in Colombia. He also reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Colombia, emphasizing continued cooperation and friendship between both nations.
The Dominican president stated his willingness to work with the president-elect for the benefit of shared development and prosperity, adding: “I wish him the greatest success in the high responsibility that the Colombian people have entrusted to him.”
Preliminary results from Colombia’s National Registry indicate that De la Espriella obtained 49.65% of the vote, narrowly ahead of government-backed candidate Iván Cepeda, who secured 48.70%. However, President Gustavo Petro has called for the official count to be completed, citing alleged irregularities at some polling stations.
