Greater Santo Domingo moves to organize motorcycle taxi stands under new security strategy
Santo Domingo.- Minister of the Interior and Police Faride Raful led a working meeting with the Director of the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Security (DIGESETT), General Pascual Cruz Méndez, along with representatives from municipalities in Greater Santo Domingo, to design a strategy for regulating motorcycle taxi stands as part of broader efforts to strengthen citizen security and improve urban transport order.
The meeting followed up on discussions held on May 26 at the Ministry of the Interior and Police and brought together multiple institutions, including the Ministry, the National Police, INTRANT, DIGESETT, the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), and the General Directorate of Migration. Officials emphasized the need for coordinated action to ensure effective enforcement and regulation of motorcycle taxi operations.
Authorities also outlined the participation of local governments, which will be responsible for regulating bus stops, issuing land-use permits, and registering authorized operating zones. As part of the proposed measures, motorcycle taxi drivers would wear color-coded identification vests by province to improve monitoring and control.
Additionally, operators will be required to hold a valid driver’s license and present a clean criminal record. A classification system for designated stands will also be developed to determine where new stops can be established, with the goal of improving traffic flow and ensuring safety for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
The meeting was attended by municipal representatives from Santo Domingo Oeste, the National District, Santo Domingo Norte, and Santo Domingo Este, along with technical staff from INTRANT and DIGESETT. Authorities agreed that continued inter-institutional coordination will be key to building a more organized, transparent, and secure transportation system that supports public order and crime prevention.
