Extreme heat pushes temperatures up to 40°C across Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Temperatures remain extremely high across the Dominican Republic, with maximums between 35°C and 40°C in several provinces as a combination of hot east-southeast winds, Saharan dust, a high-pressure system over the Atlantic, and the influence of El Niño intensify the summer heat, according to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet).

The highest temperature was recorded in Sabaneta, Santiago Rodríguez, at 40°C, while Valverde, Santiago, and Jimaní reached 38°C, and Barahona registered 36°C. In Greater Santo Domingo, temperatures are expected to reach 34°C. Indomet also warned that the heat index could climb to 46°C in Sabaneta and Dajabón, despite forecast highs of 39°C.

The meteorological agency said these conditions, reinforced by the ongoing summer season and the effects of climate change, are expected to keep temperatures above normal throughout July, August, and September across the Caribbean, urging the public to take precautions against prolonged heat exposure.
