Protests over precarious conditions at the Barsequillo Hospital in Haina

The healthcare staff of the Barsequillo Municipal Hospital, located in the municipality of Haina, San Cristóbal, reported that structural deterioration, technical failures, and the acute lack of human resources prevent the proper functioning of the medical center.

The protesters maintain that, despite having maintained the complaints for more than three years, the inpatient areas and operating rooms operate in inadequate conditions, without air conditioning and under constant electrical and sanitation risks.

During a peaceful protest held on the hospital grounds, healthcare workers warned that shortages of supplies, medical equipment, and funding are seriously jeopardizing patient safety and staff well-being. Among the missing personnel, they cited bioanalysts, orderlies, nurses, general practitioners, and specialists in critical areas such as anesthesiology, pediatrics, and emergency medicine.

“The Barsequillo Hospital plays a fundamental role in serving the local population, and therefore cannot continue operating under conditions that compromise the quality, safety, and continuity of health services,” the union representatives stated. In light of this, they requested the urgent intervention of the National Health Service (NHS) to strengthen administrative management and hospital safety.

The response from the Management

For her part, the hospital director, Dr. Susana Mateo, stated in a press release that the health center continues to make progress in air-conditioning its facilities.

According to the official, the installation of 30 air conditioning units began last Wednesday in various areas of the center, and the work will continue throughout the week until the planned schedule is completed.

Mateo also clarified that the hospital does not have a shortage of medicines, as it has four warehouses that ensure the timely supply of drugs and medical supplies.

Similarly, he announced that in the coming days, new doctors and specialists will be added to strengthen the service portfolio and improve the quality of care for users.
